Domain Rating (DR) is one of the most commonly referenced metrics in SEO. Created by Ahrefs, it measures the strength of a website's backlink profile on a scale from 0 to 100.
How DR Is Calculated
Ahrefs calculates DR based on the number of unique domains linking to a website, the DR of those linking domains, and how many other sites those domains link to. It is a relative, logarithmic scale, going from DR 70 to DR 80 is exponentially harder than going from DR 20 to DR 30.
What DR Score Should You Target for Link Prospects?
- DR 20–40: Acceptable for new sites building initial authority
- DR 40–60: Sweet spot for most businesses
- DR 60–80: Strong placements that move the needle significantly
- DR 80+: Premium placements, high cost but maximum impact
Why DR Alone Is Not Enough
DR can be manipulated. A site with DR 70 but no organic traffic and thousands of spammy outbound links is worth nothing. Always evaluate link opportunities on DR + organic traffic + relevance + link profile quality. Never DR alone.
How Fast Can DR Grow?
With a consistent link building campaign of 10+ quality links per month, most sites see 10–20 DR points of growth within 6 months. Our clients at Links Haven average a DR increase of 25–30 points in their first year.
